I bought this book because I was looking for a book that covered the reign of Louis XV and that wasn't going to be too scholarly, after reading samples of various books I settled on this because of the depth and quality of the writing, it doesn't cover to the end of Louis XV's reign but it gave me a thorough knowledge of the social and political landscape of the day as well as enligthening me about this most interesting of women. As well as her wonderful novels, Nancy Mitford also wrote four, less known, historical biographies- Madame de Pompadour in 1954, Voltaire in Love in 1957, The Sun King in 1966 and Frederick the Great in 1970. A sumptuous new biography of one of the most famous dangerous liaisonsWhen Jeanne Antoinette Poisson was a child, a fortune-teller predicted that she would one day be the mistress of a king. Fascinating book written by Nancy Mitford who writes wonderfully ,it took me back in time . I have no idea how accurate a biography this is of Madame de Pompadour, it almost certainly isn't if you are expecting one that puts Madame in a full historical context. One can really understand from this book how the court worked and how that affected the lives of the French underclass and it is evident how many of the societal problems would eventually culminate in the French Revolution under the reign of Louis' grandson, Louis XVI. This account of her rise to power , for she truly did become the power behind the throne her influence with the King lasted until her death. Softcover.
